Terriluvsbooks Corner Graceling Review

GRACELING by Kristen Cashore

Thank you, Sierra, (Slytherin book lady if you would rather) for inviting me to hop over here and share with your readers a review for a book I recently read. A friend recommended this book to me because she knows I love fantasy and strong female characters. The story starts off as Katsa masterminds a rescue for the grandfather of a neighboring king. The story starts fast and never seems to stop. The characters evolve throughout the story allowing the reader to really connect. It is not uncommon to have a warrior in a fantasy novel who is all about fighting. Katsa is more about becoming a better person and helping those around her than she is killing and fighting. The author does a great job creating a world that only enhances the plot, but also allows the reader to be a part of the scenes almost like a "fly on the wall."

Blurb:
Kristin Cashore’s bestselling, award-winning fantasy Graceling tells the story of the vulnerable-yet-strong Katsa, a smart, beautiful teenager who lives in a world where selected people are given a Grace, a special talent that can be anything from dancing to swimming. Katsa’s is killing. As the king’s niece, she is forced to use her extreme skills as his thug. Along the way, Katsa must learn to decipher the true nature of her Grace… and how to put it to good use. A thrilling, action-packed fantasy adventure (and steamy romance!) that will resonate deeply with adolescents trying to find their way in the world.

About the Author:

Lost In Temptation (Regency Chase Family Series #1)

Title: Lost In Temptation (Regency Chase Family Series)
Author: Lauren Royal
Page Count: 353
Format: E-Book
Genre: Historical Romance
Published: 2005, 2012
Publisher: Novelty Books
ISBN: 978-1-938907-09-8

Summary: England, 1815
The eldest of three sisters, Lady Alexandra Chase has always done what was expected of her. But when the man she's loved since her girlhood returns from a long spell abroad, she quite suddenly finds herself hoping that the fine Lord her brother has picked for her won't propose. She decides that if he does, she'll quite improperly turn him down--that is, until the man of her hopes and dreams informs her he has no intention of marrying her.

The last time Tristan Nesbitt saw Alexandra, he was a common man with no hope of ever wedding the daughter of a Marquess. Seven years later, he's now Lord Hawkridge, which should make him eminently suitable for the woman who long ago captured his heart. But a dreadful scandal has tarnished his name in England--a scandal so horrid that marrying Alexandra would ruin not only her flawless reputation but her whole family. For Alexandra's own good, he must fight his relentless desires and stay far away...

Review: As you guys can probably tell I really love historical romances. And again if you read these books you'll find out that most are set in England in the 1800 at some point. What I really liked about this book was that at some of the chapters beginnings it had recipes for sweets. I have yet to try one of those recipes, mostly because of the way they are written. This book was the authors cut so some of the scenes were a little bit more racy then in the original story. If you would like to read a version that cuts back on some scenes and instead focuses more on the sweet parts of the romance then you should read Alexandra. You can add both to your goodread account. I will link that below.

Lost In Temptation

There are so many different things that I liked about this book. I can't really explain just how much I loved this book. I started it last night and wound up reading it all night and then into this morning. I did finish today though so I could write up  review as soon as possible. I can't really say that I didn't like parts of the book, but there are some characters that I almost couldn't stand. Another thing that I liked was that how close the Chase family was.

Rating: I give this book three stars. If you've just now found my blog you can see more about my rating system here. If you have more questions you can find my contact info on this page which also has my review policy if you would like me to review a book. I gave this book three stars because it was one of the best books I have read in awhile and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this book to just about anyone as long as they liked historical romances

A Daughter's Inheritance (The Broadmoor Legacy #1)

Book: A Daughter's Inheritance
Authors:  Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller
ISBN: 978-1-4412-0220-8
Format: E-Book
Published: 2008, ebook edition 2010
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
Genre: Historical Romance

Summary: Lose yourself in the history, opulence, and elegance of the Thousand Islands. Cousins Amanda, Sophie, and Fanny Broadmoor are as close as sisters, but when their grandfather dies, the terms of his will just might destroy their bond. Seventeen-year-old Fanny has never put much stock in the conventions of society. In fact, she has given her heart to Michael, the family boat-keeper. But when she receives a surprising inheritance, she discovers just how oppressive society can be...and that she may be trusting the wrong people.

Dare she follow her heart and risk going against her family? What if she loses everything she's ever known? Its all comes down to one choice: What does Fanny Broadmoor want her legacy to be?

Review: I haven't quite set up a rating system yet but I'm thinking of making it like the Michelin Star system. You can find out more about my rating system here. If I was to rate this book I would give it three stars. I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to set down with the next two in the Broadmoor Legacy series. This book transported me back to the 1890s. It was a heart wrenching read. After losing both her mother and her father Fanny is trying to find her place in her family. With a family that hates each other, the book never ran short of surprises. I really liked that Amanda and Sophie stuck by Fanny no matter what. I think my favorite characters had to be Fanny and Michael. I loved seeing their love story unfold and I can't wait to see how it ends in the next two books. The practical jokes/pranks that were played in the book had me laughing and I could relate to how the girls felt. What I didn't like though was that the Servant girl Theresa and Fanny's Uncle Jonas struck up a deal to make Fanny think that Michael had no interest in her. Uncle Jonas is a conniving man and I can't stand him. Is it bad to say that I hope something bad happens to him? Something really needs to happen to make him see the light of what he's doing. Trying to steal Fanny's inheritance won't pay off for him, or at least I hope it won't pay off for him. He doesn't deserve it and he doesn't deserve his third. I really hope you guys enjoy this read, I know I did. I highly suggest that you guys check this series out. The whole series is on Barnes and Noble for your nook. I got mine free from Bookbub.

July TBR List

First of f I want to say I had a list of books but I can't find it, so I will be pulling book titles off the top of my head. I have no idea how many will wind up on this list or my wrap up list at the end of the month. I have multiple books started and I will probably finish those up and put on the wrap up list as well as the physical books. I thought I would post a little blurb for this list and then the blurb and author info will go on the wrap up list.

But life in Ceylon is not what Gwen expected. The plantation workers are resentful, the neighbors and her new sister in law treacherous. Gwen finds herself drawn to a local Sinhalese man of questionable intentions and worries about her new husbands connection to a brash American businesswoman. But most troubling are the un answered questions surrounding Laurence's first marriage. Why won't anyone discuss the fate of his first wife? Whose buried in the unmarked grave in the forest? As the darkness of her husband's past emerges, Gwen is forced to make a devastating choice, one that could destroy their future and Gwen's chance at happiness.

Hie to the Hunters by Jesse Stuart

The Sparks family--salty old Peg Sparks, his wife Arn, and their sixteen year old son Sparkie-- live in the Plum Grove Hills in a one room cabin. They don't have a lot, but they would not turn a stray hound dog away from their door and certainly not a stray and certainly not a stray boy like pale, spindly Didway Hargis, who has run away from his wealthy home in town.

The boy from Greenwood, Did Hargis and the boy from the Plum Grove Hills, Sparkie, become good friends. Did learns to love the life of the hill people, as he becomes one of the sparks family. , he and Sparkie sleep in the hayloft, each with a hound dog for warmth.  At night they hunt foxes and possums, and Did learns the difference between the long, slow "trail bark" of the hounds, and the rapid, excited bark that means the hound has treed a possum. He learns how to shake a possum from a tree, and how to set traps. By the day the boys work on the farm. Did learns how to chop firewood, how to plow with mules, plant corn, and strip tobacco. The boys reminisce about last week's barn dance, and look forward to next week's moonlight cornshucking. As Did becomes accustomed to the world of Plum Grove, and as he comes to love the sparks family and their neighbors, who are generous and kind, he grows strong, brown, and happy.

But Did and Sparkie's Appalachian idyll is interrupted by a feud between the hill-folk and a group of townfolk, led by Did Hargis' father, who comes to take Did home. Events leading up to a gala midnight cornshucking that turns into a pitched battle in the Plum Grove Hills, and the battle's after math, all make fast-moving, exciting reading.
